The Dilemma of the 1/3 Profile
The 1/3 profile in Human Design, the Investigator Martyr, has an interesting dilemma. Human Design is a dualistic system - everything exists within a binary, a this and a that. When we look at the 6 lines within each hexagram, each one is either dissonant or a harmonic with each other. In the case of the 1st and 3rd lines, we have dissonance, an underlying conflict between mind and body.
The 1st line, the Investigator, is the foundation of each hexagram. In this case you have a personality that is all about establishing security through solidifying the foundation. It is introspective, curious, truth seeking and always asking questions to find the holes. It knows that without a solid foundation, there is no way to build a house.
So the Investigator 1st line Personality wants something stable right? And then in comes the 3rd line Martyr body to burn it to the ground. As the 1st line investigates, the 3rd line comes in and puts it to the test. The Martyr body goes into an experience and finds out what doesn’t work, then wants to burn it to the ground and start again. It is always learning through trial and error and making and breaking bonds. It is resilient, adaptable and constantly bumping into things.
The 1/3 Investigator Martyr Profile is also the only Profile out of the 12 in Human Design that has both lines in the lower trigram. The Upper Trigram (lines 4-6) is focused on externalizing whereas the Lower Trigram (lines 1-3) is absorbed in its own process. This means it is the only profile that doesn’t have a consistent pull towards externalizing, things have to literally bump into the 1/3 for them to take notice. In the 11 other Human Design Profiles, one aspect is involved in its own process and the other is geared towards externalizing. However, in the case of the 1/3, both the mind and body aspect is involved in its own process. They also don’t necessarily see eye to eye on the ‘best’ way to learn.
Can you see how without awareness, this can create some turbulence for the passenger/personality? We have this conscious aspect that wants to build something secure and a body that is always ready for change. This can feel deeply uncomfortable without the passenger’s awareness of what’s happening.
The body is the life, when we let it be the authority, everything becomes a lot smoother even when the life is constantly changing. But for this personality that thinks life should have a secure and solid foundation to stand on living in a body that is always ready for growth through adaptability and change, there can be some confusion.
However, with awareness, none of this has to create problems. The personality can still enjoy its process of investigation, seeking out the holes in the foundation or what needs to be solidified. And, There very well may come a time when the body decides it’s time to burn it to the ground or simply break the bond for a while.
This personality that wants to find security learns that the body it inhabits is resilient and adaptable. Instead of looking for security in the illusion of external stability, it can learn to build security within.
With a solid internal foundation and experimentation with Strategy and Authority uztlitizng the framework of Human Design, a foundation of trust with the body can be formed. Then, no matter where/when the body decides to engage after bumping into something and when it decides to leave, the personality knows it is safe to continue its investigation as the passenger.
